About the museum

The San Giovanni in Monte museum is a small parish museum set up in the sacristy of the church of San Giovanni in Monte Oliveto in Bologna and in the adjoining parish office. It houses sacred furnishings and objects, reliquaries, ivories, glass and ceramic artefacts, and some paintings and sculptures dating from the 14th to the 18th century.

Among the most precious pieces are the reliquaries of Saint Cecilia (silver filigree, 14th century), of Saint John (gilded copper, 1413), of Saint Mary of Egypt (gilded copper and brass, 1444) and of Saint Petronius (chased silver, with the arm of the saintly bishop of Bologna). Also preserved are a small detached fresco attributed to Vitale da Bologna, two small copper paintings probably by Agostino Carracci, a small 17th-century nativity scene by Mazza and two terracotta sculptures by Ubaldo Gandolfi depicting Saint Joseph and the Infant Jesus.

Of particular interest are a 12th-century Byzantine hemispherical bowl, the parish pallione, two Agnus Dei from popes Boniface IX and Gregory XII, and some small medallions of blessed wax, among the oldest known.
