About the museum
The Museo Ottocento Bologna opened in April 2023, after about five years of preparation, in Piazza San Michele in the historic centre. It is a private art museum, directed by the art historian Francesca Sinigaglia, dedicated to 19th-century Bolognese painting, from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century.
The permanent collection is arranged in five rooms with a contemporary display and includes oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and sketches by artists such as Fabio Fabbi, Luigi Busi and Mario De Maria. The route is divided into sections: academic painting and the Goupil period, naturalism and verism, fin de siècle and orientalism, symbolism and decadence, secessionism, sacred art and portraiture.
The museum also preserves and promotes archives and library holdings of historical and artistic interest, which can be consulted for study and research, and offers school programmes, workshops and activities for summer camps.
