About the museum
The Museo dei ferri taglienti is in the historic centre of Frosolone, in Alto Molise, a town that has been known for centuries for producing scissors and knives. At the end of the 19th century this activity provided work for hundreds of people, and in the first half of the 20th century around eighty craft workshops were still operating.
The museum, recently renovated and run by the Municipality, holds hundreds of historic objects of value, recovered from enthusiasts and from the heirs of the finest scissor and knife makers of the last century. Alongside local pieces, blades from other origins are also on display, including numerous military cutting blades handed over by various heritage authorities (Soprintendenze).
Part of the museum is a craft workshop where visitors can watch forging, the ancient manual technique in which heated metal is hammered on an anvil to shape the blades, carried out by master craftsmen from Frosolone. The museum is part of the town’s museum system, together with the Casetta del pastore and the Museo del costume.
