About the museum
The museum preserves the memory of the barcari, the bargemen who for decades carried goods and people along the rivers and canals of Veneto, from Vicenza to the Venetian lagoon. The collection, built from hundreds of objects, models, photographs and reconstructions donated by the bargemen themselves, has high ethnographic and anthropological value and documents an economic and social world that has now disappeared.
The collection was inaugurated in 1999 and found its permanent home in a former municipal slaughterhouse at Ortazzo, the old bargemen's quarter. The building stands on the pontàra (a triangle of land) where the Rialto and Di Sotto canals meet the Vigenzone. The museum is run by the Comune di Battaglia Terme.
The route, described as a journey through the “rooms of time”, includes the room of traditional boats, the room of the squero (boatyard), the room History and Territory, and the room devoted to means of propulsion and life on board.
