Museo civico di Albano Laziale

Civic archaeological museum in the neoclassical Villa Ferrajoli in Albano Laziale, with finds from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages and a collection of old prints with works by Piranesi.

About the museum

The museum is housed in the neoclassical Villa Ferrajoli, set within a park, and bears the name of Mario Antonacci. The façade, with a central projecting section with a tetrastyle pronaos and a pediment showing the myth of Ceres teaching agriculture to Triptolemus, leads to interior decorations in a classical-Renaissance style by Giovan Battista Caretti.

The 23 rooms spread over three floors document the Albano area from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. Particularly important are the remains of Palaeolithic fauna, the Bronze Age artefacts and those of the Latial Culture (the “Albano” period, 11th–9th century BC); the archaic age is represented by a polychrome head of a Latin warrior of the 5th century BC and a temple high relief with a dance of maenads and satyrs.

The Republican and Imperial periods are illustrated by votive objects from local sanctuaries and by everyday objects, as well as by finds from the imperial villas of the area, such as the villa at Cavallacci (marble head of Tiberius Gemellus), the villa of Pompey the Great and the villa near Cancelliera (head of Faustina the Elder). The route is completed by video stations, a rich educational display and a collection of old prints from the 17th to the 20th century, with many works by Giovan Battista Piranesi.
