About the museum
The museum is housed in the former church of Santa Lucia, near the ancient Frangipane fortress. The building rests on a Roman cistern of the 1st–2nd century AD and was originally a Christian place of worship, later a Romanesque church dating from 1102, remodelled in Gothic forms under the Colonna family.
The church was deconsecrated in 1669 and in the following centuries had many civil uses, including as a textile workshop, a granary and a site of activity during the Fascist period. The bombing of 1944 damaged it, and it was rebuilt in 1948. The municipality of Marino bought it in 1974 to host cultural events.
The civic museum opened in 2000. It displays classical statuary, funerary cippi, sarcophagi, inscriptions, a fragment of a pergula (a screen) from the former church, and objects seized by the Polizia di Stato, mostly from the municipal territory.
