About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Velletri was opened to the public in its present seat on 22 January 2000, in the premises of the former episcopal seminary in Corso della Repubblica. It is linked to the diocesan historical archive and diocesan library, and is run by the cultural association “Il Trivio”, with the help of volunteers who accompany visitors.

The museum preserves and enhances the collections of sacred art of the diocese of Velletri-Segni. Its most precious piece is the so-called Crux veliterna, a filigree stauroteca with gems and enamels attributed to 11th- and 12th-century Palermitan goldsmiths, which according to tradition preserves a fragment of the True Cross.

Among the paintings stand out the Madonna with Child and two angels by Gentile da Fabriano, executed during his Roman stay of 1426–1427, and the Madonna of the Rosary by Sebastiano Conca, of the Neapolitan school. The museum also has rooms for exhibitions, a conference hall accessible from the cathedral cloister, and a bookshop.
