Museo civico di Belriguardo

Civic museum in the Este delizia (pleasure palace) of Belriguardo in Voghiera, with archaeological, Renaissance and modern art sections.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The museum is housed in the Este delizia of Belriguardo, a country residence of the Este family built in 1435, perhaps with suggestions from Filippo Brunelleschi. The name derives from the beauty of the place, “bel riguardare” (pleasant to look upon); Lucrezia Borgia favoured it as a residence. After 1630 the building was partly dismantled, and today the delizia is part of the Delizie estensi, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The civic museum was officially established in 2001 in the surviving rooms of the castle. The archaeological section holds Etruscan material of the 4th–3rd century BC found at Voghiera, the grave goods of the Roman necropolis of Voghenza (1st–3rd century AD), with glass, amber and a rare onyx balsamarium, finds from Fondo Tesoro, and the sarcophagus of Claudia Januaria.

The Renaissance section includes the Sala della Vigna, frescoed in 1537 by various artists including Girolamo da Carpi and the Dossi brothers, with Ferrarese ceramics from the 14th to the 17th century and a model of the Este palace. The route is completed by the room dedicated to the sculptor Giuseppe Virgili, the Ottorino Bacilieri picture gallery and a room on small Ferrarese metalwork.
