About the museum
The Museo Lapidario was founded in 1735 by the marquis Ercole Bevilacqua, who donated a Roman stele as the first nucleus of the collection. Over time the collection has been enriched by donations from local scholars and by new discoveries.
The venue is the former church of Santa Libera, built between 1470 and 1474 opposite Palazzo Schifanoia. The building housed an image of the Virgin with Saint Libera, considered miraculous by the people; it was deconsecrated in 1796 and restored in 1979 to house the museum.
The collections include Roman and medieval inscriptions, funerary monuments, stelae, cippi and sarcophagi. They document the Roman settlement of the Po delta area, with stylistic influences from the Veneto and Ravenna.
