About the museum
The museum was founded in 1981 on the initiative of pupils and teachers of the Scuola media “Quasimodo”, with the help of the Pro Loco (local tourist association). Material was gathered from the elderly and families of the village and catalogued in Italian and in dialect. Since 1996 it has been housed in Villa Laura, an early 20th-century building owned by the Municipality; in 2005 it was reorganised as part of the MuVi project, with support from the Fondazione CRT and the Comunità montana Alto Verbano.
The route inside begins with the village’s social life (school, traditional clothing, games, sports and music associations), continues with the reconstructed kitchen and household objects, silkworm rearing and weaving, and then the crafts of the carpenter, woodcutter and blacksmith, and the tools for farming, livestock and fishing. The last section is devoted to the brush industry, which shaped Cannero’s economy between the late 19th and 20th centuries.
Outside, an itinerary with information panels visits places such as the former brush factory, the church of San Giorgio Martire and, in the hamlet of Oggiogno, the historic wine press and the chestnut drying kiln. The museum is part of the Rete museale dell’Alto Verbano.
