About the museum

The Verbano Express association was founded by public deed on 3 July 1992, on the initiative of railway enthusiasts, with the aim of finding, restoring and preserving railway vehicles that had served on the lines of the Verbano. The first work concerned the locomotive e428.208 and a former FS passenger coach that had arrived in Luino.

In the following years the collection was enriched with other rolling stock, including the locomotive e428.174, the former FS postal luggage van DUI 97.078, the first-class carriage Az 10.009 and the former SBB locomotive Be 4/6 12339, which arrived in Luino in 1995.

In 1998 the Museo Ferroviario del Verbano was founded, to which all the association’s rolling stock was entrusted. Restoration and maintenance are carried out voluntarily by members at the Luino site, in the station area.

The museum holds steam, diesel and electric rolling stock, including the GR 625-116 steam locomotive, the Re 4/4 I 10002 locomotive and locomotives of the e428 series. The association also organizes trips with historic trains.
