About the museum

The Museo Civico di Canneto sull'Oglio is housed in an imposing late 19th-century building of exposed brick, built to accommodate the town's schools, which dominates Piazza Gramsci. It opened in September 1994 and brings together two collections that were already active before: the Giulio Superti Furga Toy Collection and the Ecomuseo delle Valli Oglio Chiese.

The toy collection, founded in 1984 in a small room of the Palazzo Municipale, has grown through donations and loans and documents the local production of dolls and toys: hundreds of pieces in wood, bisque, felt, papier-mâché, celluloid, fabric, tinplate and vinyl, with photographs of the production departments of Canneto's factories, prototypes, moulds and plaster models. The ecomuseum, born in the 1970s through the Associazione Ecologica Museo Oglio Chiese, found its permanent home here and presents the territory, nature and rural culture between the two rivers, with fossils, archaeological finds, tools and folk traditions, dioramas of flora and fauna and a room on the nursery-gardening tradition.

The museum also houses the Centro Visite (visitor centre) of the Parco Oglio Sud, the Bellani Donation, with nature-themed sculptures by Mario Bellani, and the Mortara Collection, a collection of post-Impressionist paintings donated by Pietro Mortara, with works by Bernasconi, Previati, Tranquillo Cremona, Longoni and others.
