About the museum
The museum was founded in the early 1920s by Goffredo Bellini (1870–1947), a collector, scholar and local historian who served as secretary of the Congregazione di Carità of Asola. Bellini began gathering objects in the premises of the Monte dei Pegni, and other citizens later donated material; in 1943 he was appointed honorary inspector of the Soprintendenza (heritage authority).
The original collection was divided into seven sections, including archaeology, painting, the Middle Ages, weapons, war relics, autographs, books and prints, and natural sciences. After Bellini’s death the collections passed to the municipality and were moved several times, between the Schiantarelli school, the town hall and Via Turbini, until 2006, when, after restoration, they returned to the Palazzo Monte dei Pegni, their current home.
On the ground floor are the introduction, with a multimedia station on incunabula and documents, the section “Collezionismo e meraviglia” (“Collecting and Wonder”), and the archaeological route from the Bronze Age to the Roman period, with a lapidary. The upper floor presents popular traditions and crafts, history from the end of Venetian rule through the Risorgimento and the First World War, the work of local painters, and a topographical room with a replica of the “Siege of Asola”, attributed to Tintoretto. One wing houses sacred art from the parish museum “G. B. Tosio”, with works by Moretto; the collection of around 600 minerals can be visited on request.
