About the museum

The museum was founded in 1985 to house finds recovered during excavations and field surveys carried out by the Gruppo Storico Archeologico di Manerbio. It is located in the 17th-century wing of Palazzo Luzzago, which also houses the town hall, the civic library and the Piccolo Teatro “Memo Bortolozzi”, and has about 500 square metres of exhibition space.

The route is chronological and follows the development of settlements in the lower Brescia plain from the Neolithic (6th millennium BC) to the post-medieval period, with material from Manerbio and neighbouring municipalities. Visitors can see flint tools, square-mouthed vessels and bronze daggers; the phase of the Cenomani Gauls, with silver drachms; and the grave goods from the Roman necropolis of Cascina Trebeschi, with 44 cremation tombs dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD.

Among the most unusual pieces is a coin of the Lombard king Ariperto I (653–661), listed as the only known example in Italy. The display ends with Renaissance ceramics produced in local kilns. The museum also has an educational workshop, a specialist library and a storage facility equipped for cataloguing and studying finds.
