About the museum

The museum opened in 2004 in Montichiari and houses the ethnographic collection of the painter Giacomo Bergomi (1923–2003), assembled over more than thirty years of research and donated to the Comune in 1999. Cataloguing began in 2002, and the records can be consulted on the Lombardia Beni Culturali portal.

The collection comprises around six thousand objects from the Alpine, pre-Alpine and plain areas of the Brescia territory and documents rural life over the last two centuries. About eight hundred pieces are permanently displayed in two sections: the first is dedicated to the traditional cycles of the year and of human life and their links with agricultural and forestry work; the second to the working of metal and wood, with carpentry, carving, basketry, shoemaking, blacksmithing and copperwork.

Among later donations are the objects of the pharmacist Italo Branca, from the Val di Scalve, and wooden toys made in the first half of the 20th century by the Poli factory of Montichiari. The museum has a space for temporary exhibitions, a video room and a conference room seating fifty, and a large hall for educational workshops. Since 2006 the ethnographic film festival “Lo specchio e gli altri” has been held here every year, and the museum belongs to the network of Lombard ethnographic museums Rebèl.
