About the museum

The Museo Civico di Paleontologia e Paletnologia “Decio De Lorentiis” is located in Maglie, in the Palazzo Ruberti, where together with the Biblioteca comunale “Piccinno” it forms the Alca cultural complex. It was founded in 1960 on the initiative of scholars such as Gian Alberto and Alberto Carlo Blanc, Paolo Graziosi and Antonio Mario Radmilli, and is dedicated to the prehistory of the Salento.

The collections, which include more than 2,500 finds from the Cretaceous to the end of the Bronze Age, present Pleistocene fauna and human remains from sites such as Cattie di Maglie, the Grotta Romanelli, Pozzo Focone, the Grotta Zinzulusa and the Grotta dei Cervi di Porto Badisco. In 1999 the material was reorganised into sections on geopalaeontology, Palaeolithic and prehistoric art, the Neolithic and the Metal Ages.

Since 2009 a new section has been dedicated to ethnography and African art, based on a donation from the scholar Florio Santini. The museum also awards the “Decio De Lorentiis” Prize, which promotes the dissemination of prehistoric studies and earth sciences.
