About the museum
The Museo archeologico della civiltà messapica di Vaste is housed in the Palazzo Baronale, a 16th-century building in the hamlet of Vaste, in Poggiardo. It tells the story of the ancient Messapian city of Vaste, from the Iron Age to the medieval period, with a chronological route that starts from the archaic and Hellenistic cult places and reaches the medieval finds.
Among the testimonies on display are grave goods from sarcophagus tombs, decorated vases, a capital decorated with rosettes, a hoard of around one hundred and fifty silver staters and seventeen ivory tesserae lusoriae, rare gaming pieces of the Roman period. A virtual reconstruction projected onto a large screen helps visitors imagine what the site looked like in the past.
The museum is part of the museum system of Vaste and Poggiardo.
