About the museum

The Museo Civico di Rovereto was founded in 1851 as a cultural association under the name Società del Museo Civico di Rovereto, on the initiative of a group of local intellectuals and professionals, including Fortunato Zeni. The founders aimed to protect the natural and historical heritage from any plundering and to spread scientific culture in the town. In some 150 years of activity the museum has had four venues and as many display layouts, up to the current one in the Palazzo Parolari, with the art collection at Palazzo Alberti Poja.

In 1983 the Società donated the entire museum collection to the Municipality, while continuing to exist as an association of members; in 2012 the Municipality established the Fondazione “Museo Civico di Rovereto”. The range of interests pursued, from the natural sciences to archaeology, from the figurative arts to technology, has made it a point of reference for the civic and cultural life of the town.

Today the Borgo Santa Caterina site houses the Museo di Scienze e Archeologia, with permanent rooms dedicated to archaeology, zoology, botany, astronomy, earth sciences and robotics, tactile displays with audio description and spaces designed for children. A second visitor site, the Museo della Città in Via Calcinari, is included in the single ticket. From 11 August 2026 the archaeology rooms are closed for refurbishment.
