About the museum
The civic museums of Sulmona are housed in the Santissima Annunziata complex, founded in 1320 as an orphanage and hospital, along the Corso Ovidio. The historic core of the archaeological collections was brought together at the end of the 19th century by the philologist Antonio De Nino; a new archaeological section opened in 2011 after further discoveries.
The museum is organised into four sections: the archaeological section with Italic and Roman finds, including the Dragonetti relief and the Pansa Egyptian collection; the Domus di Arianna, a Roman house discovered in 1991 and dating from between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD; the medieval and modern section, with sculptures, paintings and goldwork from the 12th to the 18th century; and the section devoted to the folk costumes of Abruzzo and Molise and to transhumance.
Among the works in the Pinacoteca are the triptych by Beffi of 1435 and paintings by Giovanni da Sulmona and Giovanni Conca. The museum also holds a land register of 1376 and coins minted at the Sulmona mint.
