About the museum
The cultural complex occupies the former monastery of Santa Chiara, in Piazza Garibaldi, once home to the Poor Clares. According to tradition, the production of the confetti for which Sulmona is famous began right here in the 15th century.
The diocesan museum of sacred art is on the ground floor, in the inner chapel and the large refectory, and mainly holds works from the churches of the Valle Peligna, from the late 13th to the 18th century: 15th-century Madonnas with Child, sacred vestments and goldsmiths' work. On the first floor are the diocesan library, in three rooms, the civic gallery of modern and contemporary art linked to the international contemporary art exhibition of Sulmona, and an artistic nativity scene by the local artist Enzo Mosca.
The route is guided by numbered audioguides, with teaching panels also written in easy-to-read language.
