About the museum
The museum came into being after archaeological discoveries made at the end of the 19th century in the Piazza della Maddalena. After the damage suffered during the Second World War, the collection has been back in its original seat in the historic centre since 2001.
The route includes a pre-Roman and Roman section with explanatory panels on finds and monuments of ancient Lanuvium; the display is constantly evolving. It features an Augustan fresco with Dionysian themes, marble fragments from the group of Licinio Murena (1st century BC), a parapet with a winged griffin from the Antonine period from the theatre, and architectural slabs and votive objects from the Archaic and Hellenistic periods from the sanctuary of Juno Sospita.
Photographs of the excavations of the sanctuary and of the temple of Juno (1884–1892 and 1914–1915) are also on display, along with the remains of the ancient balneum, integrated into the museum spaces. A recently opened epigraphic section presents inscriptions, including one that records embellishment work on the balneum.
