About the museum
The Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali Severo Sini was born from the donation to the municipality of Villa d'Almè of the collections of its founder, the naturalist and speleologist Severo Sini (1930), who had lived in the town since 1957 and gathered minerals, plants, prehistoric finds and natural history materials. At the end of 1973 the collections became the Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali, of which Sini was honorary director and curator; in the following years the collection was enriched by private donations.
The museum aims to guide visitors to a deeper understanding of the nature around them and to involve the community in the cultural life of the area. It is run with the help of volunteers from the association Amici del Museo Severo Sini, together with the municipality. The collections are organised in sections devoted to botany, zoology, entomology, malacology, palaeontology and mineralogy.
Severo Sini also worked in archaeology and for many years helped create the Musas ecomuseum in the Solentiname archipelago, in Nicaragua, opened in 2000 and dedicated to him. The museum recently updated its technological equipment and offers visitors tablets with playful educational apps and stereoscopic and biological microscopes.
