About the museum
The Museo civico navale aims to make Carmagnola a centre of maritime culture, in a town far from the sea but with a long naval tradition linked to the history of the House of Savoy: in Piedmont this tradition goes back almost six hundred years. The museum does not limit itself to preserving and displaying memorabilia; it intends to present objects as containers of stories, from anecdotes about the use of sailing-ship instruments to mechanical propulsion, and to in-depth studies of the maritime history of the area.
Alongside the exhibition space operates the COMAC, Centro Operativo Modellistico AMNI Carmagnola, in a separate site, which specialises in restoring maritime objects and building naval models; it also runs educational activities and allows the public to take part in the maintenance and development of the museum. The museum works with the CeSmar, Centro di Geopolitica e Strategia Marittima, and with the Associazione Nazionale Marinai d’Italia, publishes materials, holds lectures and seminars, and is in contact with other museums.
Among its most unusual pieces are the only working periscope preserved in a civilian building, which belonged to the submarine Bagnolini, a complete diving suit, a commando’s wetsuit from the early 1960s, static and radio-controlled naval models, two 305 mm shell cases from Austro-Hungarian ships of the Viribus Unitis class, and the uniform of a commander.
