About the museum

The castle was founded in the 13th century as a square fortress to defend the territory, originally surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge. It passed from the lords of Anterisio to the Biandrate and, around 1300, to the Roero, who added two round towers and a large keep. In 1680 Giacomo Beraudo, ancestor of the present owners, the Counts Beraudo di Pralormo, arrived from Barcelonnette; in 1730 they had the chapel built to a design by the architect Galletti.

Between 1830 and 1840 Count Carlo Beraudo di Pralormo, a diplomat and minister of the interior in the Albertine era, entrusted the transformation of the interiors into a representative residence to the architect Ernesto Melano, who had also worked on the Castello Reale di Racconigi. The moat and drawbridge were removed, the entrance portico and a large staircase were built, and the covered courtyard became the grand salon. The landscape designer Xaver Kurten created the English-style park. Later the Orangerie, the large farmstead and the glass-and-iron greenhouse were added.

The castle is still lived in by the family, who preserve it and open part of it to the public. The guided visit shows how the people who worked and lived in the house lived between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries: cellar, pantry with china and silverware, servants' room, kitchen, grand salon, neoclassical dining room, the minister's study and the blue drawing room.
