About the museum
The synagogue serves the Carmagnola ghetto, established in 1724. It replaced an older place of worship, and the first documented mention of the present building dates from 1786. It is on the first floor of a building in the ghetto, whose plain façade gives no hint of its purpose.
The rectangular prayer hall has a brick floor, a ceiling with exposed beams and seven large windows framed in stucco. In the centre stands the octagonal wooden bimah of 1766, surrounded by 17th-century benches; there are also five gilded 18th-century chandeliers, the aron on the left wall and a small women’s gallery (matroneo) above the vestibule. The interior is considered a significant example of Piedmontese Baroque and one of the most beautiful among Italian synagogues for the preservation of its original furnishings.
The last wedding celebrated in the hall dates from 1939. After a period of neglect the building was restored with the support of public and private bodies, including the Regione Piemonte and the Compagnia di San Paolo. On the ground floor the Jewish Community of Turin has set up a permanent educational exhibition on the synagogues of Piedmont. The synagogue and the cemetery are part of the Jewish Community of Turin.
