About the museum
The museum is housed in the birthplace of the historian Carlo Botta (1766–1837) in San Giorgio Canavese. The name, in Piedmontese, “Nòssi Ràis”, means “our roots” and reflects the purpose of the collection: to illustrate the life and the agricultural and craft activities of the village in the past.
The rooms display a large collection of material culture, with work tools, reconstructions of domestic interiors and period clothing. Among the most unusual objects are a curious “horn-straightener” and two original examples of the 19th-century phonostenographic machine devised by Antonio Michela, a native of San Giorgio, whose principle, in an updated version, is still used in the Italian Parliament.
The museum participates in the AMI museum network, which promotes the heritage of the Morainic Amphitheatre of Ivrea, and works with the civic library and the cultural associations of the village.
