About the museum
The Malgrà castle has dominated the town of Rivarolo Canavese since 1333, when the counts of San Martino began building it as a military stronghold; the works were completed around 1336. The building originally consisted of two wings joined by an enclosing wall and by a tall circular tower, which still stands. As the period of peace set in it became a noble residence: the two-arched portico was added and the rooms were frescoed with religious subjects.
At the beginning of the 17th century the castle passed to the Gria family and then to the Cortina di Favria family. In the 17th century large halls with flower-decorated ceilings and a staircase designed by the architect Boggio di San Giorgio were created in the north wing. At the end of the 19th century Countess Natalia Francesetti called in Alfredo d’Andrade and his collaborator Carlo Nigra for a restoration in period style: the works began in 1884 in the west wing and were completed by Nigra in 1926.
In 1982 the castle was bought by the Comune, which uses it for exhibitions, concerts and cultural events. Since 1993 the Associazione Amici del Castello Malgrà, in collaboration with the municipal administration, has run the openings and guided tours from May to October.
