About the museum
The museum was officially founded on 15 January 1936, but the first nuclei were already in the hands of the Comune at the end of the nineteenth century, following the suppression of the religious orders, the damage suffered by the basilica of Santa Caterina and the donation of the sculptor Gaetano Martinez. In the 1930s the collections were reorganised as the “Raccolta d'arte e storia galatinese” (Collection of Galatina Art and History). In 1931 the lawyer Raffaele Torricelli, nephew of the scholar Pietro Cavoti, had donated his uncle's works to the city on condition that the museum be named after him.
The museum was set up in Palazzo Orsini, closed in the 1940s and reopened at the beginning of the 2000s in its present seat, on the first floor of the Palazzo della Cultura “Zeffirino Rizzelli”, the former Dominican convent built between 1486 and 1508.
The route includes the Cavoti holdings, the room devoted to the sculptor Gaetano Martinez, local history (storia patria) with the room of war memorabilia, the room of parchments and the room of stone antiquities, a picture gallery of 32 paintings dating from the 17th to the 19th century, the contemporary gallery, and sections devoted to tarantism and Giovanni Valentini.
