About the museum

The museum was founded in 2004 from the meeting of one citizen's passion, Salvatore Giuseppe Micali, a former shift supervisor at the onboard radio station of the Italian Navy (Marina Militare), and the municipal administration's interest in the cultural development of the area. The collection, gathered over more than thirty years, numbers more than one hundred pieces, from Volta's voltaic pile to receivers from the 1920s to the 1970s, and includes Edison's telegraph transmitter.

The success of the initiative made it necessary to restore an old building, the underground olive mill “ex Marulli” (late 17th century), which had been closed since 1978 and was bought by the municipality in 1989; the museum occupies the building complex above it. In the mill visitors can follow the stages of oil extraction, from the torchio alla calabrese (traditional screw press) to the hydraulic presses of the 20th century.

Since 2015 the museum has been a node of the SAC “Salento di Mare e di Pietre” and is run by the association “Amici della Biblioteca”, which organises guided tours, workshops and educational routes. Between 2020 and 2023 the project “La Stanza dei Bachi” introduced gamified routes, an escape room and virtual reality experiences.
