About the museum

Museo Civita is housed in the Palazzo del Vignola, one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Grotte di Castro, designed in the second half of the 16th century by the architect Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. It is part of the Sistema museale del lago di Bolsena (Simulabo) and is dedicated to the Etruscan civilisation of the area between Lake Bolsena and the middle Fiora valley.

The route is laid out over two floors and displays the grave goods from the necropolises of Vigna la Piazza, Pianezze and Centocamere. On the first floor, Etruscan daily life is illustrated: the male and female worlds, cooking and the wealth of the aristocratic elites. In the room “I Segni del Potere” (The Signs of Power), the material from the large chamber tomb (tomb 31) and the grave goods of the “tomba della bambina” (the child's tomb) show the splendour, luxury and ritual of the banquet. A large panel tells the story of Civita, a strategic centre in the 7th and 6th centuries BC.

On the ground floor the theme is the afterlife: a full-scale reproduction of a chamber tomb and an authentic monolithic tufa sarcophagus illustrate the funerary ritual attested at Grotte di Castro. The same ticket also gives access to the necropolises of Pianezze and Centocamere.
