About the museum
The Museo della Città – civico e diocesano di Acquapendente preserves the historical, artistic and cultural heritage of the area and is run by the municipality. It is housed in the Palazzo Vescovile in Via Roma, whose restored historic rooms contain most of the collections. The exhibited items belong to different owners, and the museum arose from the collaboration between the municipality, the Curia of Viterbo, the Fondo Edifici di Culto, the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) and the ASL of Viterbo.
The collection comprises almost a thousand finds: archaic and Renaissance ceramics, stone artefacts, liturgical objects and paintings, attributed to or linked with artists such as the Master of Marradi, Sano di Pietro, Alessandro Algardi and Girolamo di Benvenuto del Guasta. The museum belongs to the Organizzazione Museale Regionale and to the Sistema Museale del Lago di Bolsena.
The route includes the Pinacoteca di San Francesco, recently opened in the Palazzo Vescovile and devoted to painting from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance; a section on archaic ceramics (medieval majolica from the 14th century, coming above all from an excavation of 1995); the room dedicated to the Via Francigena; vestments and liturgical objects of the bishops; and the episcopal prisons (carceri vescovili), which can be visited only with an escort. The museum network also includes the Torre Julia de Jacopo.
