About the museum
The Museo comunale is named after the 17th-century historian Antonio Cordici, who privately collected finds and records of the town. It was founded on 2 January 1876 to house works of art from the suppressed religious orders, together with archaeological finds, coins and marbles and some pieces from churches and monasteries.
The archaeological collections include material from the Hernandez collections; the coins come first from the Cordici collection and then from the Coppola family. The museum is housed in the Palazzo del Municipio in the centre of Erice and includes sections on archaeology, decorative arts, weapons, paintings and sculptures, and contemporary art.
Among the best-known works are the Testa di Venere, majolica panels and vessels, the Flight into Egypt with wax figures, an Annunciation and a sculpture by Antonello Gagini, as well as numerous paintings by Alberto Augugliaro.
