About the museum
The Museo del sale was set up at the wish of the owner of the salt pans, Alberto Culcasi, with support from the provincial tourism agency of Trapani and the Municipality of Paceco, and in collaboration with the faculties of Humanities and of Architecture at the University of Palermo. It is housed in a 17th-century baglio, a fortified farmstead, with a large windmill attached.
The windmill was used to lift water with an Archimedes' screw and to grind salt. There are two types: the older “a stella” (star type) and the “all'americana” (American type) with metal vanes. The collections preserve original tools such as ruzzoli, baskets, windmill sails, an Archimedes' screw, the tagghia for measuring salt, jute sacks, a barrel cart and a millstone, as well as black-and-white photographs.
The museum tells the story of the Trapani salt pans, from their Phoenician origins through the changes of the 20th century, up to the Riserva naturale orientata (nature reserve) established in 1991 and managed by the WWF since 1995. After the visit it is possible to walk among the basins of the salt pans.
