About the museum
The museum presents the artistic heritage of the Constantinian Order of Saint George, a public body that owns the Chiesa Magistrale di Santa Maria della Steccata. The Order traces its origins to the militia of Emperor Constantine; its first official mention in Italy dates from 1551. Duke Francesco Farnese acquired the Grand Mastership at the end of the 17th century and in 1718 chose the Steccata as its seat, from which time it has been called the Chiesa Magistrale.
After the move to Naples with Charles of Bourbon and the refounding in Parma in 1816 by Maria Luigia (Marie Louise), in 1860 the Order’s heritage was merged with that of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus; financial autonomy was regained in 1913, and in 1922 the Order returned to Parma as an independent legal body. The heritage consists of bequests and donations from knights and wealthy citizens.
The exhibition route, opened in 2006 inside the basilica, brings together works from the 16th to the 19th century in six sections: ecclesiastical, painting, historical, heraldic, silverware and textiles. The museum is part of the Association of the Castelli del Ducato di Parma, Piacenza e Pontremoli.
