About the museum

The Museo di Roma was inaugurated on 21 April 1930 in the former Pastificio Pantanella, on Piazza della Bocca della Verità, as part of the cultural initiatives of the Governorate of Rome; the idea was to tell the medieval and modern history of the city, alongside the Antiquarium and the Museo dell’Impero, which celebrated the myth of Romanness (romanità).

The present seat is Palazzo Braschi, in the Renaissance heart of Rome between Piazza Navona and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. The building was designed by the architect Cosimo Morelli on commission from Pope Pius VI, who wanted to give it to his nephew Luigi Braschi Onesti; it is one of the last examples of papal nepotism before the changes brought by the French Revolution.

The permanent collection occupies the second and third floors and follows a thematic approach: on the right of the first room are the rooms that formed the public part of the Braschi residence, on the left the private apartment of Luigi Braschi and his wife Costanza Falconieri. Paintings, prints, photographs, objects and multimedia supports tell the image of modern Rome, its street festivals, great events and transformations.
