The MacAM museum in Bivongi is linked to the cultural association AM international, founded in 1987 by Angelina Melia, a patron and philanthropist born in 1937 who grew up between Calabria and Western Australia. From the exhibition “Logos Mediterraneo” of 1985 onwards, the idea was to create a permanent public art collection in the Stilaro Valley, which is rich in traces of Magna Graecia and the Middle Ages but had no reference to contemporary art.
For more than thirty years the association has promoted exchanges of artists in residence between Calabria and Australia, as well as exhibitions and meetings. Two permanent collections have come out of this work: that of the MacAM museum in Bivongi and that of the Doc Art Gallery in Bayswater, in Western Australia.
The Bivongi collection continues to grow through donations and site-specific works by contemporary artists, and the museum also hosts periodic exhibitions.
