About the museum
The Museo della Certosa is in Serra San Bruno, in Calabria, next to the Certosa di Santo Stefano del Bosco, the monastery founded at the end of the 11th century by Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian order, with the support of the Normans. The museum tells the story of the monastic community, the spirituality of the Carthusians and the art linked to the figure of the saint.
One part of the route is devoted to the iconography of Saint Bruno, which spread after Pope Leo X authorised the cult in 1514. The exhibits include the cast of the silver bust of Saint Bruno, whose original of 1516 is kept in the conventual church, and the “varia”, the 18th-century processional throne made in 1797 by the Neapolitan artist Luca Baccaro and covered with embossed silver sheets, with scenes of the monks spared by the earthquake of 1783.
The route also includes a section devoted to Santo Stefano and the collection of plaster casts by the sculptor Giovanni Scrivo. The museum runs educational activities for schools and takes part in the Notte dei Musei (Museum Night).
