About the museum
The museum opened to the public in 2006 and is built around the permanent collection of sculptures, drawings, medals and design objects that Ugo Carà, born in Muggia in 1908 and died in 2004, donated to the town. The building, designed by the studio star associati, was begun in 2002 and is divided into two areas: one houses the artist's works, the other temporary exhibitions.
Carà was a sculptor, but also an architect, designer and graphic artist. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale and the Rome Quadriennale, in Paris and Brussels, in Carrara, and in exhibitions of Italian graphic art in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Mexico City. Between 1949 and 1963 he worked on the interiors of ocean liners, and the large bronze relief “Il castigo delle vergini” dates from this period. From 1956 to 1976 he taught interior design at the Istituto statale d’arte Nordio in Trieste.
The collection includes more than a hundred works among sculptures, paintings and other pieces, organised in thematic groups linked to the different periods and materials, from the early sculptures to the works devoted to women, metals, medals and experiments with the sign.
