About the museum
The Museo d'Arte Sacra del Duomo in Thiene opened on 15 March 1999 at the wish of the archpriest Angelo Rigoni. It brought together in one place liturgical furnishings, documents and memorabilia accumulated over three centuries, which had been kept in the cathedral sacristy and in the storerooms of the parish house.
The space chosen is the attic of the parish house, recently restored, where the ancient walnut and chestnut beams stand out. The museum consists of a main hall and two small rooms, with the works arranged by type and by liturgical rite.
In the centre of the main hall is a silk canopy embroidered with gold thread, woven in Venice in 1771. The first small room holds Russian and Eastern icons and liturgical linens in cotton and linen with fine embroidery. The silver room contains chalices, pyxes, censers and processional crosses, mainly the work of 18th-century goldsmiths from Venice and the Veneto.
