About the museum
The Museo Entomologico “Nel Regno delle Farfalle” has been open to the public in Schio since 1 April 2006 and is run, as a non-profit association (onlus), by the family that created it. It grew out of many years of field observation and of the wish to make Italian butterflies known through a collection arranged with scientific rigour.
The display features more than 10,000 specimens, covering all the day-flying species known in Italy, classified by species, subspecies, sex and biological form. The butterflies are kept in display cases placed in front of more than 300 large photographs of the environments in which they live, from the Alps to the Apennines, from glaciers to the sea, so that visitors can bring them back to life in their imagination.
Entry to the museum is in semi-darkness: the lighting has been designed to preserve the colours, and each area lights up only when a person enters, so that the butterflies receive as little light as possible. Members of the family that runs the museum accompany visitors and guide them through the visit.
