About the museum
The museum is housed in the 15th-century Augustinian convent of Certaldo Alto. It was restored and opened on 30 June 2001 as part of the network of sacred art museums of the Valdelsa and the Florentine area. It holds works from the churches of the vicariate, which are difficult to preserve in their original locations. The route unfolds over seven rooms with paintings, sculptures, goldwork and vestments from the 12th to the 18th century.
The first room is a picture gallery with panel paintings from the 13th to the 16th century, including works by Meliore di Jacopo, Ugolino di Nerio and Cenni di Francesco, and a 13th-century wooden crucifix of the Christus triumphans type. The following rooms hold sacred goldwork, with reliquaries, a thurible and a chalice, largely from the pieve of San Lazzaro a Lucardo, including the reliquary bust of Blessed Giulia, made in 1652–1653 by Paolo Laurentini.
This is followed by the room of sacred vestments, with liturgical garments from the 16th to the 18th century, and the Sala della Compagnia, a former chapel with 17th-century canvases and two large wooden sculptures of the Sienese school. The last room has housed the Collezione Linari since 24 August 2018, with paintings, sculptures, prints and a wooden crucifix from Villa Bardi in Linari. The museum also offers educational activities, such as the EduKids programme and the workshop “Erba della Paura” on folk herbal medicine.
