About the museum
The museum is in Alzano Lombardo, in the seventeenth-century Palazzo Pelliccioli, beside the basilica of San Martino. The basilica was built in the 17th century to a design by Gerolamo Quadrio and is regarded as a masterpiece of Lombard Baroque. It has three naves with stuccoes by the Sala workshop, frescoes by Pier Paolo Raggi and Giuseppe Pozzi, and paintings by Piazzetta, Cignaroli and Capella.
The museum’s collections include paintings, sculptures, liturgical objects and sacred vestments. Among the best-known works are a Saint Christopher by Tintoretto, the Martyrdom of Saint Peter of Verona by Palma il Vecchio, and paintings by Cavagna and Cifrondi. Illuminated codices, chalices, monstrances and reliquaries in silver and gilded filigree are also displayed, as well as a room devoted to sacred textiles and embroidery.
In the Salone d’Onore, with a barrel vault and an eighteenth-century fresco attributed to Giuseppe Orelli, the Alcova di Ganimede (1774–1775) by Grazioso Fantoni the Younger is on show; it arrived in January 2024 thanks to a collaboration with the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. The complex also includes the sacristies, with carved furnishings by the Fantoni and Caniana families.
