About the museum
The museum occupies the former convent of San Francesco al Corso, the complex that also houses the so-called Tomba di Giulietta (Juliet’s tomb), set up as a visitor attraction in 1935 by Antonio Avena in the place where the sarcophagus traditionally linked to the story of the two lovers was kept.
The Museo degli Affreschi “G.B. Cavalcaselle” opened in 1973 on the initiative of Licisco Magagnato, then director of the civic museums, and houses frescoes detached from ancient palazzi in the city, with works from the Middle Ages to the 16th century. A new southern wing was inaugurated on 15 November 2015.
In the complex, surrounded by green spaces, stone material and paintings on canvas from the 16th to the 18th centuries are also displayed. The museum is part of the Musei Civici di Verona, and its ticket also gives access to the Tomba di Giulietta.
