About the museum
The Arazzeria Scassa was founded in Asti in 1957 by Ugo Scassa and is one of the most important tapestry workshops in the world. Each tapestry is woven by hand on 17th-century looms using the traditional high-warp technique; the craft has been passed down within the family for two generations. The workshop became very well known in 1960, when it was commissioned to weave a series of tapestries for the ocean liner Leonardo da Vinci.
The workshop is located in the former Certosa di Valmanera, an old Vallombrosan monastery. By appointment, visitors can see the loggia of the charterhouse, the atelier and the workroom, where the 17th- and 18th-century high-warp looms, the raw materials and the restoration and conservation work on textile artefacts can be observed, together with part of the Collezione Scassa, which includes tapestries woven from designs by major Italian and foreign artists.
