About the museum
The museum, housed in Piazzale Santuario in Grazie di Curtatone, preserves the memory of the art of drawing and painting on the streets, handed down with the support of the Centro Italiano Madonnari. Every year, on 14 and 15 August, the madonnari gather on the forecourt of the sanctuary for their meeting and competition.
The exhibition offers a thematic route through the evolution of this ephemeral art form: from the first madonnari, tied to simple, traditional styles, to contemporary artists, who focus on technical skill. Alongside original pieces, reproductions on panels and cartoons of works first created in the squares are displayed.
Among the artists featured are Vittorio Caringella, Francesco Morgese, Francesco Prisciandaro, Straccetto-Totò De Angelis, Kurt Wenner, known for his three-dimensional effects, and Andrea Bottoli, known for his anamorphic works.
