About the museum
The Museo Tazio Nuvolari opened in 1985 in accordance with the racing driver's will, which entrusted his sporting heritage to the Automobile Club Mantova, of which he had been president from 1946 until his death in 1953. Until 2008 it was housed in a wing of the Palazzo del Podestà in piazza Broletto; it closed when the spaces changed use, and was then presented again as a temporary exhibition in the Sale del Capitano of Palazzo Ducale (2010–2011).
On 16 November 2012, the 120th anniversary of the champion's birth, the memorabilia found a home in the former Carmelino church, in via Giulio Romano, along the “Percorso del Principe” that links Palazzo Ducale with Palazzo Te. The rooms of the former historical archive were renovated to a design by the architect Franco Mondadori, with funding from the association Amici del Museo Tazio Nuvolari.
The collection includes trophies, plaques, cups and gold medals won by the “Flying Mantuan”, as well as the driver's personal effects (helmets, gloves, goggles, overalls and the yellow jersey), posters, letters, honours, period films shown on a large screen and scale models. Since 2021 the route has been an immersive digital experience, with a multilingual platform accessible from a smartphone.
