About the museum
The Museo dei Pellegrini is the museum complex of the Augustissima Arciconfraternita ed Ospedali della Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini e Convalescenti, founded in Naples in 1578 to assist pilgrims and the sick. The permanent seat was established in 1591 in Via Portamedina. The museum complex was set up in 2008 and recognised by the Campania Region as a museum of regional interest. The restoration work was completed in spring 2021.
The route unfolds over four levels and begins in the church of Santa Maria Mater Domini (1574), with a Madonna and Child by Francesco Laurana and the bronze monument to Fabrizio Pignatelli by Michelangelo Naccherino. It continues with the Terrasanta, the former burial area of the brothers, designed in the eighteenth century by Giovan Antonio Medrano, and with the Coro, the Sala del Mandato and the Sala della Vestizione. It ends in the monumental church of the Santissima Trinità, built by Carlo Vanvitelli at the end of the eighteenth century.
The historic rooms display paintings by artists such as Carlo Maratta, Francesco De Mura, Andrea Vaccaro and Luca Giordano, sculptures in marble, bronze, stucco and polychrome wood, sacred furnishings and a remarkable collection of reliquaries. The historical archive is open to scholars.
