About the museum
The Museo Archivio Laboratorio per le Arti Contemporanee Hermann Nitsch is located in the Pontecorvo district of Naples' historic centre, in a former factory built in 1892 to produce electricity, previously the power station of the Teatro Bellini. It was created by the Fondazione Morra at the initiative of Giuseppe Morra, a friend and patron of the artist since the 1970s, and has been operating since 2008.
The museum is conceived as a space for documenting and exploring the philosophical, poetic and visual ideas of the Viennese artist Hermann Nitsch (1938–2022), a leading figure of Viennese Actionism and creator of the Orgien Mysterien Theater, a form of total artwork. The works, often relics of actions, come back to life along a route open to experiences that involve all the senses.
The exhibition route covers about 929 square metres across seven rooms. The displays change every two years, while some installations are permanent, such as the laboratory of essences, flavours and colours. The 2024–2026 display, curated by Giuseppe Morra, is titled “50 anni di amicizia 1974–2024” (50 years of friendship 1974–2024). The museum also includes a documentation centre and a library and media centre on twentieth-century and contemporary art.
