About the museum
The Museo del Burattino di Bergamo opened in July 2019, run by the Fondazione Benedetto Ravasio together with the Province of Bergamo. It is on the top floor of the Province’s building in Via Tasso, in the Spazio Viterbi. The museum preserves, studies and promotes puppet theatre in general and Bergamo glove puppets (burattini) in particular; private collectors, heirs of puppeteers, enthusiasts, historians and institutions are regarded as co-founders.
The Fondazione Benedetto Ravasio was established in 1993 by the family and friends of Benedetto Ravasio, a puppeteer who died in 1990, to preserve his artistic legacy. Ravasio and his wife Giuseppina Cazzaniga had become professional puppeteers at the end of the 1940s and had renewed the Bergamo tradition, taking it beyond the boundaries of the province.
The permanent exhibition is organised by theme across six rooms and presents puppets, backdrops, stage props and stories, together with the people, trades, theatre and history behind them. Besides the permanent collection the museum includes an exhibition space, a library and an archive centre.
