About the museum
The Museo del Mare opened in 1996 in the village of Ischia Ponte, in the Palazzo (Torre) dell’Orologio, a short distance from the Castello Aragonese. It spreads over three floors and tells the story of seafaring, from the everyday life of fishermen to the exploits of the captains of the last sailing ships.
Seven rooms hold antique instruments for navigation and fishing, such as engine-room telegraphs, compasses, depth sounders, binoculars, bait, hooks and totanare (squid jigs), together with nautical equipment such as rudders, propellers, anchors, portholes and oil lamps. The collection is completed by models, stamps, historic photographs and nautical charts.
